My Teaching Philosophy
I’ve always had a curiosity for creative thinking and passion for being a lifelong learner. When working with students, I constantly challenge them to think about what role Fine Arts can play in our lives. I encourage them to investigate art outside of the classroom through collaboration, exploration and widening their perspectives through others. I never find myself being satisfied with the amount of skill sets and information I can absorb, and I like to treat my classroom environment the same way. My goal is to learn with my students and my role as an instructor is to be there to support their learning journeys.
Above are a few of my original lesson plans from my student teaching semester for elementary, middle and high school.
I see education as a process of growth over time and something that requires patience. Our life experiences shape how we learn, at what pace and ways we can succeed individually, so we should cater to those experiences. The role of an art teacher is to provide a space that welcomes questioning and experimentation, going further than essential knowledge into conceptual thinking. It’s really important for me that my students feel a sense of belonging. So I will incorporate their ideas into their learning and celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion.
The following photos are from my teaching experiences at Aiken high school, Carthage Elementary, Covedale School, the Academy of World Languages and Saturday Art camp.
